Long day for Sheldon in 6A Championship

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Steven Long rushed for 322 yards and four touchdowns and Lake Oswego won its first state football title Saturday with a 47-14 win over Sheldon in the OSAA Class 6A championship game at Jeld-Wen Field.

Long, a senior running back who transferred from Sherwood to Lake Oswego last summer, helped break the game open during the third quarter with touchdown runs of 51 and 2 yards.

The Lakers (14-0) were 0-3 in state championship games before the victory.

Long, who had 42 carries, ran for touchdowns of 1, 2, 50 and 51 yards. It was the fourth time Long has run for more than 200 yards in a game this season. The Portland State-bound Long capped a senior year in which he ran for 2,205 yards and 37 touchdowns.

Connor Strahm rushed for two touchdowns to lead Sheldon (13-1).

Lake Oswego scored 33 unanswered points after the game was tied 14-14 late in the second quarter. The Lakers led 17-14 at halftime after Harrison Greenburg kicked a 35-yard field goal with 12 seconds left.

The teams traded touchdowns during the first half with Lake Oswego striking first, finishing off a 95-yard drive on J.B. Holmes' 3-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead.

Sheldon scored two touchdowns during the second quarter, on runs of 1 and 4 yards by Strahm. Long, who rushed for 110 yards during the first half, scored on a 1-yard run to give the Lakers a 14-7 lead.

The Lakers began to pull away when, on the third play of the third quarter, Long ran 51 yards for a touchdown to increase the lead to 24-14. Later in the quarter, Long had eight carries on a 10-play drive, ending on his 2-yard touchdown run.

Lake Oswego continued to distance itself from Sheldon early in the fourth quarter when Long slipped several tackles on the way to a 50-yard touchdown run. The lead then grew to 40-14 when the Lakers got a safety on the ensuing kickoff.

Lake Oswego's defense held Sheldon to 30 yards during the second half.

It was Long's second state championship. He was a running back for Sherwood when it won the Class 5A title game last year.
