Gold Beach shuts out Scio for 2A State crown

 

COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (AP) — Quinn Johnston ran for two touchdowns and Gold Beach's defense came up big in a 30-0 win over Scio in the OSAA Class 2A state championship game Saturday.

Gold Beach (13-0) won its third state title in school history, avenging last year's championship when Scio the beat the Panthers 46-8.

Johnston rushed for 104 yards to lead Gold Beach and the Panthers ran for 272 yards as a team.

Scio (12-2) also turned to its running game, gaining all of its 217 yards on the ground. Daniel Harper led the way with 108 yards.

Gold Beach led 7-0 at halftime, getting the lone first-half touchdown on a 14-yard run by Kipp Marstall late in the second quarter.

Johnston ran for scores from 2 and 3 yards out in the third quarter, giving the Panthers a 22-0 lead. Marstall threw a 41-yard touchdown to Anthony Kelly midway through the fourth quarter.
