Sheldon makes return trip to 6A State Championship
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — High scoring Sheldon relied on field goals and defense to pull out an 18-9 win over Central Catholic in an OSAA Class 6A semifinal game Saturday at Jeld-Wen Field.
Sheldon (13-0), which has won three state titles, will seek a fourth against Lake Oswego (13-0) on Dec. 10. In 2002, Sheldon beat Lake Oswego 31-24 for the Class 4A state championship game.
The Irish, who averaged 48 points a game during the regular season, received two field goals from Sean Bellotti and scored a touchdown on a fumble recovery by Dawson Housley. Sheldon's defense also forced four turnovers.
Central Catholic (10-3) took a 6-3 lead in the first half after Mitch Seeley's field goals. With the game tied 6-6 at halftime, Sheldon took a 12-6 lead 54 seconds into the second half on Housley's fumble recovery.
Conner Strahm scored on a 3-yard run in the final minute for the Irish.
The Irish will meet Lake Oswego next Saturday at Jeld-Wen again at 1:00.
Earlier in the day, the Lakers beat Jesuit for the second time this year, 21-13.
