CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State football team closed its spring practice season with an extravaganza of fun Friday evening at Reser Stadium. The Beavers hosted their annual spring game, including an autograph session, a DJ providing tunes throughout the day and concluding with an 84-play scrimmage.

Returning starting quarterbacks Sean Mannion and Cody Vaz directed one drive apiece before giving way to their less experienced teammates. Mannion completed eight of 11 passes for 67 and one interception by starting safety Ryan Murphy. Vaz was 4-for-6 for 59 yards and led the offense to a touchdown on his only drive.

Redshirt freshman Brent VanderVeen received the bulk of the playing time completing 15 of 27 passes for 153 yards and one touchdown. The youngster showed glimpses of brilliance including avoiding disaster on one play when he mishandled the ball fumbling but recovering and using his athleticism to roll to his right before heaving a pass to Dustin Stanton for a 35-yard gain. Two plays later VanderVeen connected with Micah Hatfield for a touchdown from 21-yards out.

Several inexperienced defenders made big plays with redshirt freshman Tyler Hasty and junior Malcolm Marable recording interceptions, sophomore Joel Skotte forced a fumble that Hasty pounced on and sophomores Lavonte Barnett, Brandon Bennett-Jackson and Jaswha James and redshirt freshman Caleb Saulo were credited with sacks.

Special teams coach Bruce Read called on a pair of inexperienced kickers sophomore Riley Harper and true freshman Garrett Owens to handle field goal duties. Harper hit two out of three from 37-yards while Owens connected once.

You can watch the full spring game via replay on the Pac-12 Networks Oregon on the following dates: April 27 (8 a.m.), April 28 (4 a.m.), April 29 (4 a.m.), April 30 (6 a.m.), May 1 (11 a.m.), and May 2 (3 a.m. & 7 p.m.).  The game is available nationally on the Pac-12 Networks at the same times and dates, except for the following changes – it does not air May 1 and on May 2 it is at 5 p.m.

The Beavers open fall camp Aug. 5 in preparation for a six-game home slate that starts Aug. 31 with back-to-back home games against Eastern Washington followed by a visit from Hawai’i.
