Counting down the top local plays and achievements from the week that was in your local world of sports, Nick's Six Picks for the final week of October.

6. Picking the Hot Corner: Softball in October? Sure. The Ducks dropped an exhibition Thursday to the National Professional Fastpitch team but Lindsay Chambers was picking over a the hot corner like a pro herself.

5. Win, Lose or Draw:  Intense atmosphere Monday on the pitch of Sheldon as the Irish girls and Thurston Colts played to a draw as the playoffs near.

4. Are You Ready For State?:  Kudos to all of the district cross country winners as the State Meet is on tap for this Saturday at Lane Community College. The Sweet Home Huskies swept the Sky-Em league as Nick Hall and Nicole Rasmussen won the individual crowns. The Marist girls repeated in the Midwestern League as Monica Anderson won it all. Zach Hammond of Marshfield helped the Pirates to a district title as well. In the 6A Southwest, the South Eugene boys and girls swept with Sarah Tsai taking home the championship for the Axe.

3. D-T to L-T for the T-D:  Darron Thomas' knee looked fine and dandy on the 2nd quarter scramble and 55-yard bomb thrown across his body on the run to Lavasier Tuinei who can thank Justin Hoffman from springing him on a big block.

2. Pick Your Poison:  De'Anthony Thomas' 93-yard kick return was a back-breaker for the Cougars, but his 45-yard scamper on the swing pass from Bryan Bennett will be re-played for years. DAT channels Barry Sanders in the open field as the Cougs need to keep their heads on a swivel, but they still can't find the 'Quack Mamba' who has 11 touchdowns on the season to break Derek Loville's 1986 single-season school mark for TD's by a freshman.

1. Billies Double Up: Any of these last three plays could qualify for the top spot, but when in doubt we go with the kids. Pleasant Hill dialed deep in the playbook against Harrisburg for some Tricks & Treats on the double pass. Ryland Hayter to Will Parmenter down to Jacob Andress who finished it off for the 56-yard score.
