BERKELEY, Calif. -- The California Golden Bears were ranked No. 2 after knocking off the Oregon Ducks at Autzen Stadium last fall, but they won just two more games the rest of the way.

Now, coach Jeff Tedford has to decide on a signal caller. There are no easy answers.

California is like several other teams in the Pac 10, looking up at USC and hoping they can find that mix that vaults them past the Trojans.

The Bears enter fall camp with two viable options at quarterback.

Nate Longshore had been the golden arm for the Golden Bears until he suffered an injury last year against the Ducks at Autzen.

That left Beaverton, Ore., native Kevin Riley as the starter against Oregon State the next week.

Defensively, the Bears should be improved, with a trio of senior linebackers anchoring the defense. The bears return 13 starters, seven on defense.

They open the season just like Oregon did 10 years ago, at home against Michigan State.
