EUGENE, Ore. -- As the regular season of high school football came to an end on Friday night, there were plenty of key matchups around the area, starting with top-ranked Sheldon facing off against South Medford.

The Irish had no problem against the Panthers, as they took a 28-7 lead into halftime. In the third quarter, South Medford's Allen Fitzsimmons hauled in a deep 62-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Josh Millhollin to cut the lead to 28-14. But in the third quarter, Sheldon began to roll. Quarterback Jordy Johnson hit John Campbell from 15 yards out for a touchdown, and then later connected with the future Duck Curtis White for a 36-yard score, and Sheldon cruised to a 63-14 win.

Marist took on Elmira in the regular season finale for both teams, but it wasn't even close. The Spartans scored on their opening drive with a Logan Silver five-yard run, and then scored on their second drive on a Tevin Cheever Keeper, and the Marist lead was 14-0 early. Silver added another touchdown run in the second period, and Marist rolled to a 55-8 win.

A non-league match-up had Junction City hosting Sweet Home on Friday night as well. The last play of the first half included a rare "hook-and-ladder" play executed by Junction City, as Aaron Likens pitched it to Britt Bay for the 33-yard touchdown. It was 30-16 Tigers at halftime. In the third, Junction City continued to control the game, as Jess Lee ran it in for a touchdown, and the Tigers beat the Huskies 43-30.

Pleasant Hill needed a win against La Pine to have a slim chance to make the playoffs, and they cruised to a big win. A huge first half propelled the Billies to the 55-16 win over the Hawks. With Sisters losing to Cottage Grove, a random draw tomorrow will determine whether Sisters, Cottage Grove, or Pleasant Hill will get to go to the playoffs.

In the battle for the Midwestern League crown, Thurston took on Marshfield on Friday. In the second quarter, Pirates quarterback Kyle Tedder threw for a  32-yard touchdown to put Marshfield up 14-10 at halftime. In the second half, though, Thurston pulled ahead 17-14 with a 27-yard touchdown pass from Chance Hendrickson to Jordan Loos. And later in the third, Thurston added another score, and the Colts won 24-21 to finish the regular season unbeaten.

Churchill took on North Eugene in 5A action on Friday night. In the second quarter, North's Dylan Lubonski threw a touchdown pass to Alex Wilson, and the Highlanders took a 13-6 lead. In the third, after a Churchill fumble, North's Michael Bibbee ran one up the gut for a touchdown, and the Highlanders beat the Lancers 42-26.
