EUGENE, OR – Sunday evening’s ballgame had a similar look to Saturday’s through the first four innings with each starter holding the opposition scoreless.
The Ems did have a chance in the 2nd when they loaded the bases with 2 outs but Boise’s Loigan Padron struck out Felipe Blanco on three pitches to squash the threat. The Hawks opened the scoring in the 5th inning by taking advantage of a to lead off HBP. Ems reliever Josh Richardson then yielded an RBI double to catcher Lance Rymel and Boise took the lead.
The Ems came back in the bottom of the 6th with an RBI double of their own. Trae Santos belted a two-bagger to left center chasing home Franmil Reyes to tie things at one. Boise wasted no time coming back after reliever Brandon Fry allowed a leadoff walk and a sun-aided double setup a two-run 7th. The Hawks added two more runs in the 8th using a pair of walks and a pair of singles including an RBI knock from Yasiel Balaguert.
The Emeralds made some noise in the home half of the 8th when RF Franmil Reyes tattooed a solo blast to the power alley in left center to make the score 5-2. Again the Hawks came back this time loading the bases with a bunt, a bloop and an intentional walk. Up stepped Balaguert who crushed a base clearing triple that missed going out by inches. That put the game out of reach at 8-2 as Michael Hamman picked up the save with 1.2 innings of work. The Ems dropped the opening series at home two games to one.
The Ems will be back home for an 8-game homestand starting Thursday, June 20.
