EUGENE, OR - Springfield got 22 points from Mercedes Russell while rallying from a seven point third quarter deficit to beat Willamette 57-53 on Tuesday.
Willamette took a 33-26 lead midway through the third quarter on a field goal from Brittany Glassow who scored 10 points on the night. The Wolverines were led by junior Lexi Bando who scored 19. Bando's free throw gave Willamette a 37-34 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The Millers pulled to within one in the fourth quarter on an inside bucket from Mercedes Russell. She led all scorers with 22. Niki Duncan added 15.
Springfield took a 49-47 lead when Leila Petewon buried a three pointer. The Wolverines could not regain the lead. Duncan sank six free throws down the stretch to clinch the victory for the Millers.
Springfield avenges a loss to Willamette on December 28th at Lake Oswego High School. The two teams meet again on February 7th at Springfield.
The Millers are now 9-3 on the season while the Wolverines are also 9-3.
Elsewhere in boys action, South Eugene got by Marist 39-37.
