WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Oregon State’s Makayla Stambaugh was named the Pac-12 Gymnast of the Week for the week of Feb. 11-17 as announced by the Pac-12 Conference office Tuesday. Utah’s Tory Wilson was voted Specialist of the Week and Washington’s Allison Northey was selected as the Freshman/Newcomer of the Week.
Stambaugh led then-No. 13 Oregon State to an upset over previously unbeaten and fourth-ranked UCLA, 196.725-196.075 Saturday night. The senior scored a career-high 39.550 in the all-around to claim the individual title and became the first gymnast this season to beat UCLA’s Vanessa Zamarripa, who has four gymnast of the week honors this season, in head-to-head competition. Stambaugh, a native of Sacramento, Calif., also tied career-highs on vault (9.875) and floor exercise (9.950) to place third and first respectively. She also tied for first on the uneven bars with a 9.90 and added a season-best 9.825 on the balance beam.
Wilson was two-event winner in a draw between the Utes and Huskies. With a 9.95 this week, Wilson has now won the event title on vault in all six meets the Utes have participated in 2013. She also scored 9.875 on the beam to tie for the meet-high.
Northey, a freshman, performed in the all-around for the Huskies for her first time scoring 39.075. She tied for second on bars (9.80) and beam (9.85).
This week’s award is the fourth GOW of Stambaugh’s career and the 20th all-time for Oregon State.
Oregon State, ranked No. 11 this week, remains at home this Friday, Feb. 22, to host the eighth annual Pink Out when No. 15 Arizona and Seattle Pacific visit Gill Coliseum at 7 p.m.
