Safety tips for the Olympic Trials

The city of Eugene welcomes the Olympic Trials and many guests. As with any large event, you should consider the following general crime prevention tips. These are reminders you should remember whenever and wherever you travel - whether just a short trip in your local area, or a journey abroad.
Safe Vehicles
Park your vehicle in well lit areas of the street or parking lots
Observe your surroundings when approaching and leaving your vehicle
Lock your doors and roll the windows up
Before you arrive at your destination, lock your valuables, bags, and electronics in the trunk, and do not leave them in plain view
Do not leave pets in your vehicle during warm weather as vehicles can get extremely hot!
Do not leave your vehicle running unattended even for a short period
Safe People
Be alert to your surroundings, especially the people around you
Travel in groups if possible, and carry a cell phone
If you have to walk alone, walk with confidence
Avoid alleys and shortcuts between buildings
Walk in well lit areas, taking notice of businesses that could be a place of safety
If you suspect you are being followed cross the street, change directions or enter a business
Maintain a healthy distrust of strangers asking anything from you, and keep your personal space
Know the whereabouts of your children at all times
Keep your purse between your body and the inside of your arm
Keep your wallet in your front pocket if possible to avoid being a victim of pick-pocket
Safe Accommodations
Be alert while arriving and leaving your place of stay
If practical enter and leave through the main entry
In your room, use the view hole in the door before opening it
Lock door with the deadbolt at night
Lock valuables in a safe if available or keep them with you- never leave them in the room
Report suspicious persons to the front desk
Report any suspicious behavior, persons loitering around buildings and vehicles, or if you feel threatened, immediately call police at 9-1-1.
