EUGENE, Ore. -- Sprinter Walter Dix bested a Hayward Field record in the 200-meter dash, posting a time of 19.862 to win the final by five-thousandths of a second.

The previous Hayward record of 19.87  was set in 1988 by American Lorenzo Daniel.

Michael Johnson owns the World and American records of 19.32, set in 1996.

Dix also qualified for the Olympics in the 100-meter dash but was overshadowed by Tyson Gay's all-conditions record in that race.

Gay fell in the quarterfinals of the 200 meters and won't be able to compete in the event at the Olympics. His health is predicted to be good enough for him to compete in the 100.

Shawn Crawford and Wallace Spearmon also qualified for the Beijing Olympics.
