Former Olympian volunteers at Eugene 08
Cindy Poor-Jensen competed in the Olympic trials 32 years ago. This year, she volunteered. By David Walker and KVAL Web StaffEUGENE, Ore. -- Much of the success of the Eugene 08 olympic trials is credited to an army of volunteers. More than 2,000 of them signed up to help out. For one woman, volunteering at the Olympic trials has brought her full circle. Cyndy Poor-Jensen offers a helping hand and a bright smile in her job as a volunteer for the Olympic trials. "I signed up, came out and went to Kris Redmond, who's in charge of that, and said i'm going full circle," Poor-Jensen said. "I want to help out, so I came to volunteer."
She set an American record in the 1500. "I remember the first time I ran down the backstretch, and you know the fans were just yelling," she said. "You can't help but have a great performance." Watching the athletes compete in the trials this year, Poor-Jensen talks about some of the differences from when she ran. "There's awesome talent," she said, "and they have so much more in terms of you know just their equipment, the technology, even the knowledge." Now more than three decades after her record-setting performance in the trials, Poor-Jensen is happy to be back as a volunteer at Hayward Field in Track Town USA. "I actually went down to the track and it was just an incredible -- even talking about it now -- it's just an overwhelming feeling," she said. |
