Peavey pitches shutout, OSU defeats Tennessee 1-0
Greg Peavey threw a complete game shutout as the Beavers took the deciding game of the series with a 1-0 victory.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Greg Peavey dominated Tennessee Sunday afternoon, holding the Volunteers to three hits in a 1-0 shutout in front of 2,217 fans at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
“What an outstanding performance by Greg,” head coach Pat Casey said. “He kept Tennessee off balance today and really made an outstanding performance. It was a great way to close the series.”
Peavey gave up a single to Charley Thurber in the second, and a double to Chris Fritts in the fifth. He also walked Cody Hawn and hit Zach Osborne with a pitch in the first. None of the four runners got past second, however, and Peavey remained virtually in control for the entire game.
Hawn tried to start a rally in the ninth, reaching base via a single with two outs in the ninth, but Peavey, on his 108th and final pitch of the game, got Blake Forsythe to strike out looking on a 3-2 pitch to end the game.
All told, Peavey struck out a career-best nine Tennessee batters en route to his first career complete game shutout.
The native of Vancouver, Wash., lowered his earned run average to 0.64 with the outstanding effort. He began the game at 3.60.
Stephen McCray matched Peavey for the first six of his seven innings of work, but the Beavers, who were held hitless until the sixth, got to the right-hander in his final inning. Brandon Hayes doubled down the left-field line on a 1-0 pitch, and stood at second with one out. Parker Berberet then extended his hit streak to four games with a bloop single to center, scoring Hayes from second.
It was Oregon State’s only run of the game but it proved to be enough on a game that lacked any real offense from either team. Like Tennessee, Oregon State managed just three hits, with Adalberto Santos breaking up the no-hitter with a single to left in the sixth. The Beavers also managed five walks off McCray and reliever Matt Ramsey, but left six runners on base.
The victory gave the Beavers a 2-1 series victory over Tennessee, and Oregon State improved to 5-2 on the year. The Beavers took the series opener, 17-1, and the Volunteers won game two, 9-2, on Saturday. The series marked the third annual Papé Grand Slam.
Tennessee dropped to 4-2 on the season.
