EUGENE, Ore. -- The Eugene Emeralds need to come up with $3 million to help complete construction of PK Park on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene, Ore.

One possibility: re-name the team the Springfield Emeralds.

"We've been talking to city of Eugene for a while about some things that they might be able to help with," DG Elmore, who owns the Emeralds, told KVAL News. "We've also been talking to the city of Springfield. One idea we floated with Springfield was if we'd be willing to change the name to Springfield Ems. We like our name, but if the city of Springfield makes this possible, then we would certainly make that possible in order to get the facility in order."

The ball team needs to come up with $3 million in the next 18 months to complete PK Park, which is being built for college baseball.

To meet Northwest League requirements, the stadium needs a locker room and manager's office for the visiting team as well as an umpires' locker room. The improvements would also include a walkway from the locker room to the field, two additional concession stands and a training room for the Emeralds -- whether they remain the Eugene Emeralds or become the Springfield Emeralds.

"There's nothing concrete, just framework and brainstorming, so it's not fair for me to comment right now," Elmore said. However, he added, "When we approached the city of Eugene in particular we weren't getting a very favorable response.

"With the university and City of Eugene it's pretty complicated because they've got so many things they're trying to deal with and this might just muddy the waters for them," Elmore said.

In search of a favorable response, the Ems have held talks with Travel Lane County and the Chambers of Commerce for both Eugene and Springfield, said Bryan Beban with the Emeralds.

"We're not proposing a bond measure or tax increase," Beban told KVAL News. "That's not the right thing to do."

The Ems have six more home games -- three this week and three the first week of September. The final home game at Eugene Civic Stadium is Sept. 3 -- the same night as the Ducks football season opener at Boise State.

The Ems have played their home games at Civic Stadium for the past 40 years. Built in 1938, the stadium is the only known example of a Depression-era ballpark remaining in Oregon.

The Oregon State Historic Preservation Office announced last October that the stadium has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.
