State Wrestling Champions Chase Kearney and Zac Brunson

Churchill Dynamic Duo Prevail at State

Churchill High School's Wrestling Team made their mark on the Oregon State Wrestling Championship held February 25-26 at the Portland Memorial Colliseum. With a decorated group of 13 wrestlers, all placing in their Regional Finals, the wrestlers were lead by six Regional Champions; Housten Ezel-125 lbs, Joe Potts-139 lbs, DJ Ishihara-135 lbs, David Tena-145 lbs, Chase Kearney-152 lbs, and Zac Brunson-160 lbs. The wrestlers were up each morning at 5:00 a.m. and headed out for weigh-ins for the days action. Wrestling started at 8:00 a.m. and lasted as late as 10:00 p.m. and back to the hotel to rest up for the next morning. Two Churchill Wrestlers would reach the pennacle of their season by becoming State Champions in their respective classes. Chase Kearney (154 lbs) was the first Champion of the night winning by decision over a grappler from Hermiston and in the very next bout, Zac Brunson (160 lbs), now a three time State Champion, claimed his prize beating his opponent from West Albany. Also earning honors for Churchill were Housten Ezell (125 lbs), a two time state finalist, 2nd in state and Joe Pots (130 lbs), a three time medalist at 3rd in state all three years. The remaining eight state participants were Jorrin Ishihara (103 lbs), Hunter Goguen (125 lbs), DJ Ishihara (135 lbs), Max Thomas (135 lbs), Aaron Bordeaux (140 lbs), Dave Tena (145 lbs), Trevor Davis (171 lbs), Graham Bellerby (215 lbs) and Will Dawson (285 lbs). Churchill only looses two seniors for next season and will seek to repeat as League and Regional Champions in 2012.
