OPERATION QUILTS
The Thursday Night Quilt Group and Friends of Bethesda Lutheran Church (BLC) in Eugene have been busy this past year making quilts for the military serving overseas, mostly in war zones. Ginger Banks, Ret. Lt. Col. of Coburg, Oregon started this operation about eleven years ago and over 6,000 quilts have been sent. The quilts are cot size (40” x 65”) and most are red, white/tan and blue.

The BLC quilt group started out making 12 quilts for their members and/or family members and then it grew to a total of 30 for friends and family of Bethesda.

Interim Pastor Mark Gilderhus, an Army National Guard Chaplain, asked the group if they would make them for his unit, the 1249th Engineering Battalion headquartered out of Salem, Oregon, who would be deployed to Afghanistan in February. Sure, they said, and now are making the last 38 out of 178 to be sent. All that is asked of the recipient is to send a picture, if possible, in uniform with the quilt.

The last sew-in will be at Bethesda Lutheran Church on Saturday, April 16th from 9 am - 3 pm. The quilts will be blessed at both the 8:30 am and 11 am services on Sunday, June 5th, and then on Monday the 6th we will start shipping them out

They have them on their cots & have appreciated receiving them and have ask for the rest of their unit to receive one also.

Nice gesture. But take it from me as a Vietnam Vet, the troops would rather have cookies and other baked items. The quilts unfortunately, would not be allowed on bunks unless things have really changed.
