Then came the listing, under the Endangered Species Act, of the northern spotted owl and the marbled murrelet, a seabird. Logging on public lands promptly collapsed, together with many of the businesses that relied on it. Between the late 1980s and the late 1990s the number of jobs in Lane county's lumber industry dropped from 11,500 to 6,800.
