EUGENE, Ore. — HIV Alliance received a $25,000 grant to support its Oregon Rural Alliance of Dental Leadership (ORAL) program. The grant, which was given to the organization through the Walmart Foundation’s State Giving program, will serve to empower individuals to make healthy choices by providing free dental care to uninsured individuals living with HIV and AIDS in rural Oregon counties.

“The ORAL program enables us to provide comprehensive dental care to approximately 400 people living with HIV and AIDS in our service area,” said Diane Lang, HIV Alliance executive director. “Walmart’s generous gift will allow us to directly serve approximately 125 HIV-positive clients who would otherwise go without proper dental care.”

In celebration of the HIV Alliance and the services it provides the community, Walmart representatives announced the grant at the organization’s annual fundraiser, the Red Ribbon Circle Breakfast, at the Hilton Eugene & Conference Center in October.

“Walmart is dedicated to the communities it serves and recognizes the importance of local organizations that offer HIV education and testing to members of the community,” said Matti Havener, Walmart Regional General Manager for Oregon and Washington. “The Walmart Foundation is pleased to provide this grant to HIV Alliance and we are hopeful that it will help Lane County residents living with HIV and AIDS receive proper dental care.”

The Walmart Foundation supports organizations that create opportunities so people can live better. The Walmart Foundation State Giving Program strives to award grants that have a long-lasting, positive impact on communities across the U.S.

In FY 2010 in Oregon, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation awarded more than $2.5 million in cash and in-kind donations to local organizations in the Oregon communities they serve. Through additional funds donated by customers and by Walmart associates throughout the state, the retailer’s contributions in Oregon totaled more than $3 million.

To be considered for support, prospective grantee organizations must submit applications through the Walmart Foundation State Giving Program’s online grant application process. Applicants must have a current 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status in order to meet the program’s minimum eligibility criteria. Additional information about the program’s funding guidelines and application process is available online at www.walmartfoundation.org/stategiving.
