We (the Leisureland Community) live on Stagecoach Road, Swisshome Oregon, 97480. A landslide closed our road at about milepost 8.4 in the morning of 12/30/11. This road is gravel and runs next to the Coos Bay Rail Link.

The postmaster in Swisshome (Mary) called to tell us that the road was washed out "indefinitely" at around 11:27am, and so we drove up to look at it. The footage included is our initial approach to the scene and our impressions of it. A road crew was at the scene, putting up warning signs, but did not try to control our observations.

What we saw was that a piece of the road had been undermined by water (draining from the other side of the road) and had slumped down about 40 feet to the railroad below. One culvert stuck out of the exposed roadbed but water was freely flowing from two other locations that had no culverts. As we watched for about 10 minutes, material continued to flow along the water's path, mostly as mud and small stones. The slide essentially wasn't over yet. We watched one two-foot section of the remaining road crack and break off, quickly dissolving in the rapid streams.

As I wait for the video to upload, a dump-truck with large stones (double or triple ballast size, as much as 2 feet around) visibly in it just drove past towards the slide, perhaps intending to shore up the escarpment and hold the rest of the road on the hill?
