Jasper Heals after Doggy Daycare Attack

I've been getting requests to see Jasper my Old English Sheepdog that was attacked/mauled by 13 dogs at a doggy daycare in Springfield due to lack of supervision. This happened at the very end of Dec. in 2007.

The photos on this post are of him post healing. You can see the original story here.

He is doing extremely well. His only vice is that on and off he still battles a very mild ear infection. He had bilateral severe infections due the trauma of the bites at the end of Dec. 07 when this happened. The other dogs tried to rip both is ears off and he had through and through lacerations to both. His scariest injury was that trauma to his salivary gland which swelled up literally like a baseball under his jaw - it took at least 8 weeks to resolve. Nothing could be done for it medically except surgery which would be risky and very expensive. The vet specialist, Dr. Valentine said it would most likely go away naturally with time and indeed it did.

Other that that, he still loves other dogs and people. I think the 11 medications he went through during his ER stay and afterwards combined with his 8 weeks of almost all day sleeping just really wiped out his memory. He was so sore afterwards, he would just sleep all day.

Now he's like a puppy again and he'll be 2 years old in July. Can't believe how lucky I am to still have him - everyday is a blessing. It's hard to believe this is the same dog that only a few months ago had over 200 staples and countless open wounds. At one point you could see the muscles in his leg through the holes that were bit into him. Some of the wounds had to heal open as the staples didn't take. But with twice daily hydotherapy and clean beds twice a day he was fine (that was my part) - and antibiotics of course (the vet's part), those were so quick to close up - they changed visually everyday and it was amazing.

Lastly, the daycare did end up paying part of the vet bills a few months after KVAL aired the story and after I went on a letter writing campaign for a few months. I am very grateful for this and we both wish the daycare better days and offer forgiveness.

Thanks for everyone's well wishes,

Jane & Jasper (woof!)

Your story is heartbreaking...I love dogs so much (we have 2) and to see that sweet, adorable dog all torn up made me ball! It is so incredible to see him healed, and even more incredible that he still loves dogs and people. That is one amazing dog!

I don't think It is a very good Idea to have that many dogs in the same kennel at once or even outside playing at once because that just spells disater. Your story is so sad and I think you have such a beautiful dog. I hope he is doing better.

So glad to see and hear that Jasper is doing great! My little 20 lb dog Duchness got attacked in Aug 05 by another dog, her chest was tore open. It is awful for your "baby" to be tore up.I could hardly stand it. Jasper looks like a "sweetheart".

I believe that dogs are one of God's ways of showing us about His unconditional love. Those of us who have loved and owned dogs are blessed to receive such a love. Jasper is a beautiful blessing and touches our hearts. Thanks for sharing your story.

My dog just recently got attacked by a rot/lab mix at our doggie daycare. They kicked the dog out but just found out that it went to another daycare and killed a dog there. I wanted to know what was done to the dog that attacked your dog?

I have no idea how old your post is "doggiehurttoo"....It was a pack of dogs that attacked my dog, so nothing was done to those dogs. My vet claims that any dog can attack in a pack, it doesn't mean it's a bad dog. I try to keep an open mind

But I'm not sure about the choice of some daycares to take in fighting or guard breeds like rotts and pits. My mom had a rott, and though we loved her, we knew not to do something that dumb. She was a very serious dog, not to be "played" with.

So..Leader of the Pack Doggy Daycare is now out of business. I just found out (it's now May 3, 2009). I have no idea why they closed & when, but I'm glad they cannot any longer take in dog breeds that are refused by other daycares in town.

I can't believe the daycare did not pay for everything and also major $$$ for the pain and suffering of this wonderful dog!!! You are a very special person to be able to forgive these people for such a horrible act of stupidity..Your dog is awesome!!
