Recently, on a trek through Costa Rica, my boyfriend and I came across Avaiarios Sloth Rescue Center of Cahuita, Costa Rica (on the caribean side)
The story goes like this: Viarios Del Caribe was originally created by Luis Arroya and Judy Avey-Arroya in 1972 to protect 230 acres of tropical rainforest.
In 1992, according to the lore, a couple of little girls were playing in a barrio nearby the Varios Del Caribe, when a heard what sounded to them like a baby crying. Following the sound, they came upon a baby sloth, on the ground and whimpering. Not knowing what to do, they decided to scoop it up and take to Judy and Luis.
Judy and Luis took the baby, and although difficult to find helpful information on how to care for it, they endured. The baby became known as Buttercup.
Since then, the focus of the avarios became sloth rescue, and the sanctuary was born.
This is the only sloth sanctuary in the world.
They have about 100 sloths, and often are able to help them and then release them back to the wild. However, sloths get injured frequently, so they have many permanent residents. It's an amazing experience to go to visit the sloths, and I would highly reccomend it.
Many people go there for a volunteer experience, and some colleges have students spend time volunteering for credit. You can visit the sloth sanctuary online by going to www.slothrescue.org. They have some great pictures and sloth info. on their site.
