Southeast Eugene residents were awakened by the sound of a low-flying helicopter early this morning. The chopper was spraying a biological insecticide known as B.t.k., in an effort to stop the spread of gypsy moth. Gypsy moth caterpillars are one of the most destructive tree defoliators in the United States.

This was the second such application to more than 600 acres in southeast Eugene. A third application is scheduled to occur May 19.
