This is a male breeding American Avocet they are rare in western Oregon in the summer. They usually breed in southeastern Oregon’s Klamath, Lake, Harney and Malheur Counties in the summer. They are in the same family with the Black-necked Stilt which have been breeding recently in the Willamette Valley. Where I took this picture at Fish Butte wildlife area there were more than 20 Black-necked Stilt and this was the only American Avocet I saw. The female may have been setting on her nest be cause he was staying in one area like a guardian.
