Shark on the OR coast? Believe it!

My nephew Christian Miller was staying at the beach at Rockaway, Oregon. While walking on the beach, someone came up to him and asked if he had seen the shark, and then pointed it out. He took this amazing video.

I'm not sure who the stranger is who's trying to help the shark back into the ocean. Apparently, they were able to get it to swim back out.

I always heard it was too cold on the Oregon coast for sharks. Guess I was wrong ... and I'll be remembering that in the future.

The whole front of the shark's face has been cut off. A propeller could have done that, or another shark. Its nostrils are totally gone, so there is no way for this shark to survive. It was simply beaching to put an end to its suffering and die.

i have fished carolina beaches for years the largest shark caught off cherry grove peir s.c it was 1743 lbs. the guy who caught it and i,ve seen the picture's said it was the smallest of 3 he caught that day. they are everywhere where humans play

Uh, I don't know where you got that idea, but there are certainly sharks off the coast of Oregon. Anywhere you find sea lions, you are going to find white sharks, as they are their favorite prey. Sharks exist in every ocean of the world.

I don't agree that they break the law if the shark looks helpless...I would definitely help any sea animals get back to ocean. It's same thing as helping get whale back into ocean. It's part of protecting sea life from getting washed up on beaches.

As far as sharks and the Oregon Coast, sometime in ?70's? a surfer was attacked by a great white north of Newport. A few yrs. later I gave the guy a ride. He pulled up his t-shirt, to show a large void, where his ribs used to be. Tourists, Beware

I agree with QueenaDina despite what "Tony J. says ..." - Whatever law he's referring to was meant to protect "sea life." Sometimes (and in this case) compassion trumps law. The world is not black and white. There are many shades of gray.

Oh for Pete's sake: maybe whoever posted it didn't know they were breaking the law...I would've done the same thing,.tried to help the poor thing. ..they are kind and compassionate people to at least try to help out and not watch it suffer.

I was told by an Oregon commercial fisherman many years ago that there are as many sharks off the Oregon coast as anywhere else but the water is so cold and the weather such that people stay out of the water more in Oregon than in warmer climates.

I hope the family who posted this realized that, despite their good intentions, by tampering with sea life they are actually breaking the law. Still, really cool video.

"The shark in the video is a blue shark," Jim Burke, director of Animal Husbandry at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport, Ore., told KVAL News. "They are fish eaters and probably got caught in the surf zone after chasing its prey near shore."
