The first part of the trail into the Proxy Falls loop.. passes over old lava beds. The trail has steep spots and is somewhat rocky. The views are spectacular as you look out over the lava...up into the mountains and see the basalt rock faces..and the trees..well the trees just need to be seen..Once through the lava bed you will find yourself in old growth timber.. I haven't seen timber like that since I left Valsetz as a child..long ,long ago...
