My son's, Nathaniel (age 5) and Matthew (age 7), just got their yellow belts in Taekwondo. They have spent the last few months working hard. We (mom and dad) are so proud of their accomplishment. We know that this is only the first of many new belts, accomplishments, and skills learned. Keep up the hard work. We love you!

I went to the beach to shoot the sunset. The weather was beautiful, but windy.
When I was driving through Coos Bay, I had noticed several young couples dressed to the hilt...
This Lovely Couple showed up on the lookout, and asked a gentleman to take their picture.

He was just an average solider from Albany, Oregon. His name was David, he was 55 and he died Easter Sunday at 11:30 P.M. in the VA Hospital in Seattle Washington.

He was active duty Army for 22 years including service in the field hospitals in Desert Storm. The army diagnosed his cancer as resulting from his work in the field hospitals, where, when the scud missiles were going off, he would race to gown up himself and the patients in hazmat suits.

We are going to bury him Monday April 16th with full military honors. Those soldiers like my Brother David who die in VA hospitals from illness or injuries sustained in the line of duty are no less heroes then those that fall in battle. They willingly gave their lives for their county.

(This is a picture you asked for in relation to the story you are running on 2/24 about the revival of granges. ) I spent a lot of my childhood at the Melrose Grange,8 miles from Roseburg, Oregon. My great grandfather, great grandmother, grandfather and grandmother (not to mention a few great uncles) were past Grange Masters. I had my singing debut at the Christmas party there when I was 8 years old. I played a piano recital for my great grandfathers 60th (?) anniversary of being a grange member. I remember all the tamale feeds, and dinners and meetings complete with entertainment and skits and just the wonderful neighborly attitude of all the people who were members. They were kind of like an extended family when I was growing up and I am still friends with many of them and their children. It was a wonderful and wholesome part of the country way of life. My grange has now closed due to membership lapse and has become a building for rent for public and private events. But I will never forget how growing up in the grange shaped my attitudes and gave me beautiful memories that will last forever.

Kim (age 43 with a 20 year old son) was misdiagnosed 4 years ago with fibrous dysplasia, when she actually has a meningioma -- a brain tumor. Prior to the correct diagnosis in November, she had what was an unnecessary surgery at OHSU in Portland in late August, costing thousands of dollars. After the diagnosis, she had brain surgery at OHSU in November -- again costing tens of thousands of dollars. And while they were able to get bits and pieces of the tumor, the majority is inoperable. The tumor has stolen the eyesight in her left eye, most of the hearing in her left ear, and left her in considerable and constant pain.

She worked in HR at Head Start, but it's not clear whether she will be able to return to work any time soon. So Papa's Pizza on Coburg Road is holding a fundraiser for her on January 5th, and you need the flyer for your purchase to benefit her fund.

To commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor on this cold and foggy December 7th, 2011, I am flying a solid line of eight Flags, all at half-staff, in front of my house here on Donovan Drive.
The eight Flags, from left to right, are the U.S. Flag, State of Oregon Flag, U.S. Army Flag, U.S. Marine Corps Flag, U.S. Navy Flag, U.S. Air Force Flag, U.S. Coast Guard Flag, and for the first time, the U.S. Merchant Marine Flag.
Backing all of them up is the World War II Veterans Flag commemorating the 50th Anniversary of WWII.
Our white Ford Focus is sporting a pair of patriotic outside mirror covers (AKA: Mirror Bras) and two U.S. Car Flags.
