Katie McNutt, an elementary school teacher at Hoover Elementary School in Corvallis, has been named the third term recipient of the 2012/2013 Education Celebration Award, presented by the Oregon College Savings Plan. McNutt, who teaches a grade one/two loop, received a $1,500 award for herself, and a $5,000 check for her school today at a surprise morning assembly, where nearly 400 students celebrated the announcement. The Oregon College Savings Plan annually presents the Education Celebration Award to three educators — one per term — in the Oregon K-12 educational system that have motivated and inspired children to be better students.

McNutt, who was both surprised and overwhelmed, stated, "It is a wonderful experience to feel the warmth and support of our community."

A total of 68 nominations were received from around the state; McNutt received nominations from seven parents, including Nicole Winward. According to Winward, “Ms. McNutt strives to encourage the students to see how all knowledge is interwoven, often blending together math and nature or art and science topics. She also helps children understand that participation in discussion is important; they seem unafraid of criticism of their opinions and ideas as long as they are honestly offered. This encouragement of communication and inquiry is one of the greatest gifts she has given to so many of her students.”

McNutt utilizes a process teaching style, which evolved out of The Daily 5 and CAFE system of literacy assessment. Her approach involves a combination of scheduled, integrated tasks during the course of a school day, including reading, remembering, explaining, adult feedback and journaling. According to McNutt, process teaching works well for high achievers while giving her time to spend with kids who need more attention.

McNutt originally planned to be a lawyer, but stumbled upon a teaching internship in college, and found her passion in teaching children. Her first foray into the classroom was in 1974-75 in California, and with the exception of 12 years off to raise her own children, she has been teaching kindergarten through fourth grades ever since, with a particular passion for all day kindergarten.

“We are so thrilled to have Katie receive this recognition," stated Hoover Elementary principal Bryan Traylor. "She is an amazing educator, and her teaching style has caused many of our staff to shift their thinking about teaching and student learning. She believes in and expects so much more from her students than does convention, and they always rise to the occasion."

The Education Celebration program, which began in the 2011/2012 academic year, has featured winners from Roseburg, Halsey, West Linn, Albany, Portland, and now Corvallis. In total, the Oregon College Savings Plan has awarded $41,000 to schools and educators since founding the program.

Hi David, this is Donna Geil. 4 years ago you came to my house and interviewed me and my husband and was at the airport when my daughter, Crickett and I were reunited after 51 years.
I have a story that you might be interested in. It's sad but I think would be a good news story.
My son's friend's wife, has a best friend that is dying with cancer. She has a dream, (wish) to go up in a hot air balloon. When they talked to me about it, I told them that I just happen to have a friend that does Hot air ballooning. Well I have it set up when the weather is ok for it, but is going to be a surprise to Heather, that has cancer. We just want her to think she is going to see some balloons go up. But actually we have it all planned to take her up in the balloon. I am still working on some of the details. But you can call me if you are interested.
Thanks

I am a U.S. Navy Veteran and served from 1987-1995. I went back to school and am now a senior in engineering at Oregon state University. I am also a survivor of military sexual trauma (MST). I was raped during my service. The man who attacked me raped two others and was sent to prison. MST survivors rarely see this happen. It is all too often the case where their voices are never heard and worse they are threatened by superiors for trying to report. In 2012 the Veterans Administration reported 3,182 cases of rape and sexual assault were reported and further estimate that over 85% go unreported. For over 20 years I have been silent about my trauma and found no reason to speak out. Now, at OSU I have found a reason. Others.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and here at OSU we have events we are hosting to create awareness on campus and in the community. On April 10, 2013 at 6pm on campus we are hosting a showing of the Oscar and Emmy nominated filmmaker Kirby Dick comes The Invisible War, a ground breaking investigation about rape within the U.S. military. Focusing on the powerful stories of several veterans, the film is a moving examination of the staggering personal and societal costs of these assaults. Both a comprehensive inquire and an insight into what can be done to bring about much needed change, The Invisible War urges us all, civilian and military alike, to fight for a system that protects our men and women in uniform.
Key Note Speech by Myla Haider:

For Former Army Criminal Investigation Division Sergeant, Myla Haider, working as a criminal investigator, prosecuting rape cases for the U.S. Army was difficult and often disheartening. Following the screening of The Invisible War, come hear Ms. Haider speak about her experiences as a criminal investigator and the past and current military practices surrounding sexual violence. Q&A to follow.

In 2014 President Barak Obama has stated we are pulling out of Afghanistan. When we pulled out of Iraq our student Veteran population at OSU doubled. It is now time that we stand up and support our Veterans in a way that can be realized by the Veteran. That is through awareness of the challenges they face and resources to create successful stories. Veterans have already shown they are superior through their military training and have served us, now we must serve them!
When: April 10, 2013 6pm
Where: Withecombye 109 Oregon State University
Who: Showing of The Invisible War and Keynote speaker Myla Haider.
Why: You sleep safely in your beds at night because of the service and sacrifice of our Veterans. Now come serve them by learning about what is happening in our military and how they are being treated while they proudly serve.

A local father can't stand the thought of children in the community not having the opportunity to celebrate Valentine's Day. He posted this message on Facebook on Tuesday, "In light of the recent developments, with the uncaring announcement by 4J and their belief that the reason for banning Valentine's Day at McCornack Elementary is that the treats are unhealthy and it may clash with someone's religious beliefs (because as we all know "loving thy neighbor" is highly contestable - we are talking about Valentine's Day people). I feel that it will be my pleasure to be there in passion red to wish those children a Happy Valentine's Day.... If you feel so inclined to support my efforts to right this wrong (and it IS a wrong) come and stand with me Thursday afternoon and deliver love. Share this with others if you wish."

Keven will be dressed as "Captain Valentine" and will be waiting for the children to get out of school at McCornack Elementary school at 2:15pm.

Construction by Logan, Utah based Symbiotics, LLC to retrofit the dam to produce hydroelectric power is well under way. The project is supposed to be completed by June 2013. Until then, it's odd to see piers, docks, and boats left high and dry. It also felt strange to park on pavement that was 20 feet under water when I visited the lake last year!
